Why Champagne Bottles Have That Weird Punt at the Bottom

Contact Us

We were pouring something bubbly last weekend and got into an argument about the dent in the bottom of the bottle. You know the one — that deep dome pushed up into the base. It's called a punt, and the story behind it is more interesting than we expected.

It started as a pressure problem

Champagne bottles hold liquid at roughly 90 psi. That's about three times the pressure in a car tire. When early sparkling wine took off in the 1600s, glassblowers had a real problem: flat-bottomed bottles kept exploding in the cellars. Whole racks would go up in a chain reaction. Cellar workers wore iron masks. That's not a joke, that's a documented safety practice.

The punt fixed two things at once. Arching the base inward turned the bottom into a dome, which is a much stronger shape for holding pressure than a flat disc. Same reason submarine hulls are round and airplane fuselages aren't square. It also gave the bottle a stable ring to sit on, because early handblown bottles had a rough pontil scar right in the middle of the base that would otherwise wobble.

Then it became tradition, then marketing

Modern glass is strong enough that you don't strictly need a deep punt anymore. Plenty of pressurized bottles have shallow ones. But once something works for 300 years and looks fancy, it doesn't go away. Sommeliers use the punt as a thumb-grip when pouring — stick your thumb in, fingers along the side, and you get a controlled tilt without smudging the label.

There's also a lingering myth that a deeper punt means better wine. It doesn't. What it means is more glass, which means a heavier, more expensive-feeling bottle, which producers of high-end champagne lean into on purpose. A cheap prosecco can have a punt just as deep. The correlation is mostly about how much the winery wants the bottle to feel in your hand at the dinner table.

A few other places the punt shows up

Once we started looking, we noticed punts everywhere. Olive oil bottles have shallow ones. Some craft beer bottles have surprisingly deep ones (Belgian ales, mostly, because they're also bottle-conditioned and hold pressure). Wine bottles for still reds and whites have them too, though there the reason is more about sediment — the ring at the base traps the gunk when you decant.

So the next time somebody at a dinner tells you the punt is there to make the bottle look expensive, you can tell them it's actually a 400-year-old solution to cellar explosions. Which is a much better story.

If you've got a weird-origin fact you think we should chase down for a future Friday post, send it our way — we collect these things.

What Customers are Saying?

  • We needed to get our hiring paperwork in order before bringing on summer staff. Amanda walked us through the offer letters, I-9s, and file setup in a couple of sessions. Everything was ready before our first hire started, which took a lot of stress off our plate.

We had been dealing with spotty coverage in the back half of our shop for a long time. The team came out, assessed the layout, and had everything sorted within a day. Customers and staff can actually stay connected now without hunting for a signal.

  • We needed help getting our email under control after adding two new staff members. Amanda came in, sorted out the accounts, set up proper access levels, and made sure everything was backed up correctly. Took about half a day. Simple, clean work.

We needed to update our employee handbook and get some basic HR policies in writing before bringing on new staff. Amanda worked through it with us over a couple of sessions and we ended up with something we can actually use. Solid help, reasonable timeline.

  • We needed someone to help us sort out our insurance coverage and make sure we weren't over- or under-covered as we added staff. Amanda walked through our policies with us and flagged a few gaps we hadn't noticed. The whole review took less than a day and gave us a clearer picture of where we stood.

We needed to sort out how our staff were being classified and what paperwork was actually required for contractors versus employees. Amanda walked us through the differences and helped us put the right documents in place. It took a couple of weeks but we have a cleaner setup now.
