The Post-it Note Was a Failed Glue Experiment

Contact Us

We were cleaning off a desk this week and found roughly forty Post-it notes stuck to things that no longer needed them. Which got us wondering: who decided a mildly sticky yellow square was a good idea? Turns out the answer is nobody, at first. It was an accident that sat on the shelf for years before anyone figured out what it was good for.

The glue that failed

In 1968, a 3M scientist named Spencer Silver was trying to invent a super-strong adhesive for the aerospace industry. He got the opposite. What he made was a glue that stuck to things lightly, peeled off cleanly, and could be reused. In adhesive-research terms, this was a disaster. You can't hold an airplane together with something you can pick off with a fingernail.

Silver knew he had something unusual, though. For the next five years he gave internal talks at 3M pitching his low-tack glue to anyone who'd sit through the slides. He called it "a solution without a problem." Nobody bit. It just sat there, technically brilliant and completely useless, for most of a decade.

The bookmark that saved it

The rescue came from a coworker named Art Fry, who sang in a church choir and kept losing his place in the hymnal. Paper bookmarks fell out. Dog-ears ruined the pages. In 1974, sitting in the choir loft, he remembered Silver's weird glue and thought: what if the bookmark stuck to the page but came off without tearing it?

He tried it. It worked. And then something else happened that nobody expected. Fry started writing notes on the sticky bookmarks and passing them to colleagues on documents. The colleagues wrote responses back on the same notes. The bookmark wasn't the product. The note was the product, and 3M almost missed it.

Why they're yellow

This part is our favorite, becuase the answer is deeply unglamorous. The lab next door to the Post-it team happened to have a lot of scrap yellow paper lying around. That's it. No focus groups, no color psychology, no brand strategy. They grabbed what was nearby, it looked fine, and by the time anyone thought about picking a real color, yellow was already the color. A billion-dollar product line, and the signature look came from someone else's leftover paper.

Post-its launched nationally in 1980, twelve years after the glue was invented. Which, honestly, is a long time to be walking around with a good idea in your pocket waiting for someone to notice.

If you know a weird-origin story we should chase down for next Friday, send it our way. We collect these.

We had been putting off setting up a proper phone system for way too long. They came in, assessed what we actually needed, and had everything running within a couple of days. It was a straightforward process and the pricing was fair. We should have done this sooner.

We had been putting off dealing with our old server setup for way too long. Alexander came in, assessed what we had, and got everything migrated to a cloud backup that actually runs on its own now. The whole process took about a week and our files have been solid since.
