We were poking around a used piano shop last weekend and got into a conversation with the owner about why the keys are laid out the way they are. Turns out the answer is way older and weirder than we expected. So: today's fun fact is about the piano.
If you looked at a harpsichord or early fortepiano from the 1600s or 1700s, the naturals (what we call the white keys today) were usually black, and the sharps and flats were white. The exact opposite of a modern piano. The naturals were often made of ebony or stained hardwood, and the raised keys were topped with bone or ivory.
Nobody wrote a rule saying it had to be that way. Ebony was durable, dark, and pretty, and it made the shorter raised keys pop visually against it, which helped players find their position. It also just looked expensive, which mattered when your instrument was basically furniture for aristocrats.
Sometime in the late 1700s and early 1800s, piano makers started flipping the scheme. A few reasons get thrown around by historians. Ivory got cheaper and more available, so covering the wide naturals in ivory became the flex. It reflected candlelight better in dim rooms, which mattered before electric lighting. And some people argue it just made the keyboard easier to read at a glance because the eye tracks the longer, lighter surface first and uses the black keys as landmarks.
By the mid-1800s the modern layout was standard. Steinway, Bösendorfer, and the other big names all shipped white-natural pianos, and that's what stuck. The old dark-key pianos didn't disappear overnight, but they became the exception instead of the rule.
The other thing we hadn't really thought about: the group-of-two, group-of-three black key pattern isn't decorative. It's a navigation system. Without it, 88 identical keys would be almost impossible to orient on by touch. The clusters let you find middle C without looking, because C is always the white key just to the left of a group of two blacks. Every octave repeats the same visual anchor.
Basically the keyboard is a piece of very old interface design. Someone in the 1400s figured out that humans need landmarks on a repeating grid, and the solution has held up for six hundred years. Not bad for a UI decision made before anyone had heard the word UI.
